Does Cleaning Solar Panels Improve Output?
Yes β cleaning can improve output when panels are noticeably dirty. Dust, bird droppings, pollen and salt film block sunlight from reaching the cells, and heavy spots on a few panels can pull down a whole string. How much you gain depends on how dirty the panels were, their tilt and your location. Comparing your monitoring app before and after a clean on similar sunny days is the best way to see the difference.
Bird droppings are the worst offender
A single dropping can shade part of a cell completely. Unlike dust, it doesn't wash off in rain.
Check your monitoring app
If output has dropped compared with the same month last year, with similar weather, dirt is a likely cause β though it's worth having an electrician check for faults too.
Not every system needs frequent cleaning
Steep panels in clean, inland areas with regular rain may stay reasonably clean. Coastal, dusty, low-tilt and bird-affected panels benefit most.
